Toshi grabbed Souji the first chance they were alone, he held him tightly, enveloping the smaller man close to him.  He could smell the acrid stench of blood that stained the Shinsengumi’s warrior garments, his silky purple hair, still tied, was meshed with mud and dried blood.  He didn’t care, Souji was alive and that’s all that mattered.  He kept him in his embrace, waiting for the fierce hatred imprinted in his purple eyes to fade away.

Souji, the Shinsengumi captain was a fearless and unforgiving soldier. The sword he held had been stained with the blood of enemy soldiers and if the amount of blood puddle around them left an imprint on contact, every inch of his delicate, flawless ivory skin would have been marked with it.  His eyes stared coldly at him at first, wide and full of animal ferocity, he was trained to kill and he mastered his craft – he had done it well, but somehow it had slowly affected his spirit.  Soon enough, Souji’s body started shaking as he cried in despair.  Hijikata felt his pain but he could only wait for his emotional roller coaster to pass, it was Souji’s way of cleansing his soul.

“Shhh, it’s alright Souji, don’t do this to yourself,” Hijikata embraced the hurting samurai closer, “we’re alive, we should be thankful for that. We have a duty and we’re bound to carry it out.”

Hijikata moved his hand slowly massaging the back of his captain which effectively calmed him down.  After a while, Souji’s heart began to beat a little slower, his breathing much calmer, and the desperate sobbing had ceased to random sulking hiccups.  His embrace was now reciprocated, as he felt the delicate arms wrapped around his waist. Souji managed to loosen the tassel of his yukata and snaked his cold arms around him and ice cold hands now clenched the muscles of his back, holding him in a desperate embrace.

“Toshi, stay with me tonight, I don’t want to be away from you,”  Souji begged him.

Purple eyes met his brown pair, gleaming, begging as tears continued to flow down his delicate cheeks, now tainted pink. Souji needed to be with him, his only solace for the cruelty he willingly delivered.  It was his way of protecting the most important person in his life, the tall man before him, his Captain.  He sold his soul to the devil.  He killed without care for the sake of saving Hijikata from getting hurt.  He figured, the more enemy ronins hacked by his blade, the sooner the war would end and they would be free to live a life together.  It was a selfish wish he wanted so much to come true…. and soon, just to have more days spent loving him, before his own end came before him.

Hijikata smiled, he held Souji’s chin at the tip of his fingers, lowering himself to meet the soft warm lips of the young man he loved so much.  His desire was matched equally, a desperate kiss, raw emotions exchanged as tongues played, lips bruised, sucking and teasing.  They moaned, holding the other tighter and when they let go, the feral need for their raw desires to be released was evident. This was how they tamed the cruel animal in them.  After a night in battle, they would meet and surrendered themselves to a night of wild lovemaking, letting the other man know the true emotions locked in their hearts.

“Sou…ji,” Toshiro panted, “I need to get you out of those garments, but not like this.”

With that Hijikata led the bloodied samurai to the bath, stripped him of the soiled uniform, loosening the lasso from his hair allowing the purples tresses to cascade down and curtain the younger man’s behind.  The taller warrior led the now naked “beauty” to a low bench and with a warm wet cloth wiped down the stains from the ivory skin he loved to mark with kisses.  He washed the mud and dried blood from the silky hair that wildly blankets Souji’s smooth skin and at the peak of passion, his flushed skin would enhance the already beautiful face framed by thick purple hair.

When Souji was cleaned up and his hair washed, Hijikata reached for a fresh clean white yukata, his lover was known to wear around the barracks.  He helped Souji dress up while the smaller man pat dried his long silky hair.  Hijikata, cleaned himself as well, divesting himself of his own garments, exposing a well toned and muscled body that Souji loved to gaze at.  It didn’t take long for him freshen up, Hijikata was not actively involved in battle and didn’t succumbed to the kind of quagmire his lover faced earlier that evening.

When they returned to Souji’s room, the young Captain immediately set-up his extra large futon at the center of the tatami covered floor while  Hijikata prepared some herbal tea.  He took out the mint cream he kept in one of Souji’s storage drawers. He planned to give his lover a soothing massage, his way of checking his body for internal injuries.  He found the cream and looked at Souji, who was seating next to his futon, waiting.

“It will be just a minute, the water is close to boiling,”  HIjikata warmly informed the purple eyed man.

Souji was exhausted, but his eyes gleamed noticeably at Hijikata and when brown eyes met his, Souji blushed and felt warm all over.  Hijikata smiled, the more Souji’s cheeks turned red.

“Eh gomen, let me help you then,” Souji stated avoiding the taller man’s gaze.

“Stay, don’t move!”  Hijikata commanded, his brows knitted and sternly eyed the smaller man, “let me take care of everything tonight, Souji,” he smiled.

Souji kept his eyes focused on the tatami covered floor with both hands rested on his lap. His heart was beating happily, appreciating the kindness of his leader, friend and lover.

“Toshi thank you for taking care of me,” he whispered shyly.

“How about love, there’s no appreciation for my love?”  Hijikata teased. An obvious pout and frown chiseled on his handsome face as he kneeled before the beautiful man.

Souji smiled showing his most alluring gaze, mesmerizing his stern leader, melting him like goo.

“I have all night to thank you for that.”

Hijikata could hear Souji’s laughter, crisp and full of innocence as he sat in his room perusing the reports from last night’s watch.  Jovial screams of other children resonated as well from the campground’s entrance area, which only meant that Souji was in the company of the town’s kids. He found it relaxing to listen to happy children at play and Souji’s mirth.  Despite the eerie trepidation of every Shinsengumi warrior about the rumors of an impending battle with the opposing factions, listening to the children’s happy voices, gave him hope.

Souji, despite his condition, still managed to smile and encouraged everyone’s fearful hearts.  Hijikata smiled.  “He will carry us through our fears.  Forgetting his own fears and living each day happy like a child, innocent and pure.”

“Commander Hijikata are you busy?”  Souji asked, claiming his attention from his own thoughts.

“What is it Souji?” Hijikata queried back.

“The children asked if we can get them candy,”  Souji inquired,  “I run out of supply, would you like to walk with us to town and get some more?”

“ Why do I have to accompany you to buy candy?  You and the kids can walk to town and get the sweets,”  he replied disapprovingly.

Souji showed him a childish pout as he focused his eyes on him.  “But you enjoy walking to town with us.  I thought it will be good for you to get away for awhile.”

Hijikata folded the reports and neatly set the logs back in the case.  He pushed his table aside and stood to straighten his yukata.  “I can never say no to you Souji,”  Hijikata confessed.

Souji smiled, eyes gleamed as his cheeks slightly blushed.  “Toshi,”  he whispered.

“Souji!”  Hijikata glared.  “We are not alone,”  he continued.  He wondered how  Souji could be this playful chibi one minute and suddenly transform into an alluring vision of beauty before him.

“Well, I can’t wait for the time when we will be because I like it when you can’t say no to me!”  Souji winked at him as he reached to hook his arm on Hijikata’s.  Souji led his Vice Commander to meet the children at the entrance area.

“Children, Vice Commander Hijikata will walk with us to town and treat us for candy!”  Souji announced and the children jumped and yelp happily.

Toshi glanced at Souji momentarily and sighed. “I guess you want me to buy the candies too!”

Souji nudged his side. “It will be worth your while, I promise,” Souji replied as he kept his smile on his face.

“You are such a brat, you know that!”  Hijikata replied quietly.

“I know, but you love me for it!” Souji declared in response.

Hijikata smiled in agreement. “Children let’s go and get candy,”  he led the group out of the campground and into town, his heart joyful, sharing another happy moment with Souji.

I Want Candy! )

oOo

“He won’t find out and you won’t get into trouble!  Please Tetsu?”  Souji pleaded, “Please get a bag of it for me?”  Souji stated, batting his eyes like a chibi.

Tetsu Ichimura was instructed to go to the village with his big brother, Tatsu and his new best friend, Suzumu  and purchase provisions for the camp.

“Souji-senpai, why do I have to get it for you, why don’t you ask the other senpais?  The Vice Commander will have my skin and, not to mention, take my swords away, if he found out!”  Tetsu was almost in tears.

He liked his Souji-senpai a lot and he won’t hesitate to do anything for him, except for this particular request he was asked to do.  It wasn’t a difficult task, but Tetsu knew it was something the Vice Commander wouldn’t allow Souji to have at this time.

Souji-senpai was not allowed to have sweets, until he fully recovered from his injuries. Tetsu remembered every word, like a tattoo marked in his brain, especially when the Vice-Commander glared at each and every Shinsengumi soldier, while he stressed his order succinctly:

 ABSOLUTELY NO CANDY FOR SOUJI!

Souji pouted for days, after the edict was passed down the line and every samurai was aware of it like a new law; and disobeying it?  Tetsu didn’t know the consequence and surely it wasn’t equal to seppuku!  But was it?

“Not over a bag of candy!” Tetsu didn’t know what to do!  He imagined himself under the watchful eyes of the demon Vice-Commander, ordering him to his death over a bag of candy he bought  for his Souji-senpai.  Tetsu wouldn’t dare cross the Vice Commander’s path with this one!

“Please forgive me Souji-senpai!”  Tetsu bowed his head in apology,  “I cannot help you with your request.”  Tetsu turned and sprinted as fast as he could.

Souji-senpai was a kind-hearted and happy man but when the dark cloud of frustration looms over his head, he could turn into one mean, sadistic cold-hearted man and he could be scary when he was in that kind of mood.

A week passed and Souji was seething.  He was now plotting evil schemes to bring the entire house down and for each and every samurai who was on his hit list - fallen soldiers – those who slid off his heart!  On top of his list was Toshi’s name!

Despite Souji’s deep love for the Vice Commander, his decision to ban candy from Souji was a declaration of war.  Souji’s purple eyes blazed of ill will and his mind grudgingly schemed of all the different ways to get Toshi for his mean deed!

“Give it up Souji!”  Toshi grunted as he passed by his lover’s room.  He could read the plots in Souji’s mind and he was prepared for anything.  He stood just outside Souji’s room, smoking his pipe.

“Surely you do not plan on hurting every soldier in the house simply because they refused to buy your candy,” Toshi playfully admonished his lover,  “get some rest and I promise to make it up to you when you get better.”  Toshi continued, he smiled at Souji, who continued to avoid him.  He ogled at his young friend who was pouting over the lack of sweets for about three weeks.

Toshi sighed.  “I guess it couldn’t be helped.”   After emptying his smoke pipe of the burned tobacco, he entered Souji’s room.

“Toshi, you’re mean!”  Souji declared.  “Why can’t I have my sweets?  I want candy!”  Souji played Toshi without shame, he was on a mission and he was resolute to win this game.

“I feel much better and actually healthy enough to go to the sparring hall for an hour everyday.”  Souji declared.  “I could even add my name for active watch and…”

“You will not do such thing Souji!”  Toshi calmly stated in a very terse and serious voice, “you are relieved of your Captain duties until I say you are ready.  Your illness is not one to be taken lightly Souji, please understand.”

Toshi’s concern could be heard in his voice; frustrated at times because Souji acted more like a toddler when he was sick and would not listen to reason.

“Then why can’t I have candy!  I am sick and candy will make me feel better!”  Souji continued to pout, “I want candy Toshi!”

Toshi did not know whether he was going to slam his fist on Souji’s head for being so stubborn and hard-headed or if he was going to slam his own head on the post for even trying to reason with his Souji.  He furrowed his brow as he hanged on every bit of his patience and his face was smug as he watched Souji successfully toyed with him.  Toshi couldn’t win when Souji was set on getting what he aimed for.  This time it was candy and Toshi would just need to come up with candy for Souji.

“I will see to it Souji, you will get some sweets before dinnertime.”  Toshi left Souji with a big smile on his face.

oOo

When Souji woke up from his afternoon nap, he noticed a huge tray was set for him next to his futon.  The tray had three oddly shaped covered bowls and a small note with his name.  Souji smiled, excited to find out what the tray had in store for him.  He read the note and his face beamed as he finished reading it.

Souji brought the tray closer to him and peeked underneath the bowls.  He first uncovered a small round container and found round golden balls. He picked one and tasted it.  His eyes popped out with excitement as he chewed on the honey lemon sweet.

The next container he uncovered was the huge bowl in the center.  He almost screamed in excitement when he saw what was underneath the cover. The apple slices covered with honey syrup was one of his favorite treats. Souji couldn’t hold his scream of appreciation when he discovered the last surprise.  He found honey sticks covered with finely chopped cashew nuts, a special treat Toshi made for him and he enjoyed a lot.

Souji picked up the note and read it once more.

Souji,

It’s not the store candy that you craved  for,
but your friends helped me put together
something that will satisfy your
sweet tooth.

 Toshi.

“I guess there are better things than candy!  Toshi was right, I am a brat!”  Souji laughed at himself, “so much for my hit list!”
