The evening had an aura of magic, intoxicating and alluring one’s senses to act without care towards burning desires. It was barely spring but with the warm weather pushing away the threats of winter, the air was filled with the sweet scent of lilacs and apple blossoms from trees surrounding the perimeter of the University.

Naoji strolled towards the dense thicket outside the castle walls, his usual escape away from the noisy chatter of other students. He needed this time to calm himself, to re-focus. Spending the entire day in close proximity to Orpherus was too much of a burden to handle. It was hard to concentrate in class, listening to Orpherus argue cases presented and winning with his straight-forward logic. It was intense for Naoji, marveling over this intelligent human. He knew from the first time he gazed at Orpherus, he was deeply drawn to him but denied to recognize it. For months he refused to face the truth of his intense feelings. He displaced his thoughts by keeping Ludwig’s company in the hope the presence the other man will numb his heart from yearning for the other.

Naoji found the bench at the center of the forest just a few feet from the slow flowing spring. The mist playfully enveloped him as he came closer to the hot spring. He knelt down to touch the water, the warmth felt soothing against his skin. He removed his wooden slippers and slowly untied the obi as he walked towards the bench. He neatly set his heko obi and removed his yukata, folding the robe with precision. Naoji completely undressed, he descended in the warm spring and relaxed. Eyes closed, he could only hear silence and the strong unsettled beating of his heart. He sighed as he partly opened his eyes and gazed at the silvery brilliance of the full moon. His thoughts were once again occupied with Orpherus, his emerald eyes and smooth corn-like tresses.

“Such a weak man I am, unable to will my foolish heart to stop yearning for someone I can never have.” Naoji uttered. “I must will myself to stop until I can no longer feel anything.”

“Feel what, Naoji?” A familiar voice queried. Naoji’s eyes opened wide, he slowly turned towards the direction of the voice and there stood before him the last person he wished to see.

“Orpherus!” Naoji answered as he gazed at curious emerald eyes watching him, once again his heart thumping so loud. He closed his eyes acknowledging his defeat. He can’t stop his feelings for this man no matter how hard he willed himself to do so.
