“Nowaki I don’t understand,” Hiroki stated.
The medical student remained silent and waited for Hiroki to continue. It was three in the morning and he was surprised to get a call from his lover.
“Idiot! Answer me!” Hiroki spoke once more, this time sounding annoyed.
“Hiro-san, why are you not sleeping?” Nowaki asked in reply. It was snowing heavily outside and somehow Nowaki figured what his lover was doing. He was exhausted but relieved to hear Hiroki’s voice. “I will be home in a couple of hours. I wish I could be there next to you and warm you up,” Nowaki whispered, “Please stop reading my letters when you’re alone, especially when it's snowing outside.”
Nowaki smiled upon hearing the sigh at the other end of the line. It bothered him that Hiroki kept all of his letters and would repeatedly read each confession of his yearning love when his lover was home alone.
“If you sent me these letters in the first place then, I would have had the opportunity to write you back,” Hiroki responded.
“Hiro-san,” the medic smiled, “I didn’t know how else I could’ve continued if I made you lonely, I would’ve missed you so much and flew home without finishing my studies that year.”
“I could’ve had these letters with me then they would have kept me warm during those cold nights like this one, Nowaki,” Hiroki answered, “but that’s all in the past. I have your letters now and I can’t wait until you get home.”
Nowaki felt like he was floating on air as his heart thumped heavily, picturing Hiroki waiting for him by the door, “I will warm you up, I promise.”
“Good,” Hiroki stated, “just to let you know, your letters aren’t enough anymore to keep me warm during snowy nights, reading your sweet words makes me even colder.”
“Stop reading, you should get some sleep,” Nowaki answered, his face almost flushed red, “I love you, Hiro-san.”
“Nowaki, you idiot,” Hiroki exclaimed then quietly confessed, “I love you too.”
