for:
31_days
Tezuka stared at the date on the calendar, before slowly moving his attention towards the piles of black and red, glossy sheets of art paper next to a case of specially ordered black and red envelopes. The black and red colored markers were neatly lined up on one side of the art table. He noticed other supplies of black and red, which for sure would be used to adorn the artwork his Fuji would eventually show him as soon as he figured out the design.
The 16th of December marks the countdown to Christmas and each year has been a memorable time, marked with Fuji’s ever so fickle, sometimes random, unexpected surprises that simply leaves him speechless. He loves the holiday season simply because of how Fuji makes the celebration truly memorable and from the heart.
True to Fuji’s uniqueness, he could not even think of anything that would be close to guessing what his love is up to this year. The holiday mayhem begins with the holiday cards. Tezuka usually buys a box of holiday cards from the store and mail out his cards to friends and family by the first of the month. Three years back, Fuji told him box cards were not distinctive enough, so he decided to make their holiday cards. He still remembered the designs Fuji created. He kept the original artwork s in a special keepsake box together with the actual holiday cards.
“Syusuke?” Tezuka called as he padded towards their bedroom, empty and quiet. He gazed towards the bathroom door and wondered if he’ll see his beloved napping in the tub, like he would normally do when he needed to relax while thinking of his holiday design. The bathroom light was off, however, and there was no music playing in the background. The bespectacled man frowned, wondering where his partner would be at this time. He did not see his slippers by the entrance to their apartment and his outdoor shoes were neatly set at its usual spot.
Tezuka fished out his cellphone and speed dialed Fuji’s number. Immediately, he heard the first lines of a holiday song, “Carol of the Bells” playing constantly. After hearing it six times, Tezuka decided he would undoubtedly ask Fuji to change his ring tone. The call went to voice mail and Fuji’s recorded message played. Tezuka didn’t bother and turned off his phone as he padded towards the location of Fuji’s cellphone.
When he reached the living room, he found Fuji napping on their carpeted floor, between the kotatsu and the couch. Fuji was peacefully snuggled under the kotatsu covers and barely visible. He gazed at the sleeping man, combing the silk trestles aside draping over his face, Fuji looked very exhausted. He noticed crumpled balls of drawing paper littered around and the sketchbook and pencils next to the honey-haired man.
Tezuka sat on the floor next to the sleeping man, resting his back on the sofa behind him. He picked up the sketchbook and viewed the holiday designs Fuji created. As he scanned through the pages, he was mesmerized by the extraordinary work his lover had created. He noticed one caricature of himself, with notes on the side, “black suit, red tie,” written on one side and at the other, “All I want for Christmas… is Syuusuke” with Fuji’s name crossed out. He chuckled, once more gazing at the sleeping man.
“You know me so well,” he uttered quietly.
He saw the simple design Fuji drew on the next page. Tezuka knew their holiday greeting would look exquisite in black and red. Tezuka recollected, these colors had specific meaning in origami and Fuji plans to utilize the two colors in sending a memorable message from the heart. A red poinsettia embellished with gold dust set on a black background with a notation “From our home to yours…"'
A simple wish that shared their love to family and friends, in black and red.
