“Tricksters’ Night ha?”

Fuji noticed the devious inflection on Atobe’s voice. He didn’t have the time to waste on any verbal battle with him. He switched to speaker mode and placed the phone on the table, so he could continue his work while the ore-sama blathers on. Fuji figured his caller wouldn’t even notice his non-attention when he continues his ramblings about his awesome but “woe is I” self.

Fuji checked the ticket sales data on his laptop, and how many costume grab bag recipients, there were so far from the sales. His team planned on twenty random ticket holders to receive the bagged costumes when they are identified after their tickets scan at the entrance of the hall. So far, thirteen marked tickets have been sold. Unclaimed grab bags will be randomly distributed during the evening.

The artist sighed, feeling a little nervous. The game event was entirely his idea, and his group thought it was something fun and at the same time would help raise the funds for their organization. The twenty participants will also have a scroll in their bags with a riddle that would help them find the holder of their bone in tile markers. He created fifty where thirty other holders will try to mislead the participants. Whoever ends up with the correct tile marker will participate in the final game which would be the costume auction. Whoever end up with the most bid wins and the winner will have ownership of the costume and/or the person wearing the costume. Of course, everyone participating is aware of the evening fun fare, well not in detail, but the outcome so it’s not a surprise for anyone.

“Is Tezuka attending? You will be busy with over-seeing the activity. I should go too and keep an eye on Tezuka!” Atobe suggested with quite an excited voice.

Fuji eyed his phone and rolled his eyes. He almost forgot about Atobe. For some reason, he couldn’t remember the other things Atobe mentioned earlier. His attention only returned when he heard Tezuka’s name being mentioned by his pompous friend.

“Tezuka doesn’t need a baby-sitter.” Fuji replied. “Don’t you have some fund raising thing or ball that you have to attend to or something?”

The artist grabbed the Twizzler stick from the opened candy package and playfully unraveled a red string half-way. He placed the tip of the lose strawberry flavored string in between his teeth and pulled the string all the way and began slowly chewing on the dangling sweet while he loosened the rest of the stringed candy. He could hear Atobe rambling on about the Masquerade Ball his parents’ company organized each year.

“The ball goes on all night until dawn, so we’ll all go right after your party.” Atobe stated his plan confidently.

Fuji eyed his phone again, his eyebrow quirked so high in disbelief. They already turned down the invitation and here is Atobe slyly trying to get the two of them to attend the ball.

“Tricksters’ Night is a fund raiser as well so my presence will be for a worthwhile cause.” He noted pompously.

Fuji smirked, “What happened to hard times, money being tight and all?”

“Ah, but there’s nothing more worthwhile like showing support, especially among friends,” Atobe continued.

Fuji pulled another string of Twizzler and began chewing hard, frustrated about the presented dilemma. Atobe got him, hook, line and sinker, and he could just picture Atobe pumping down his fist in jubilation. If there’s one thing Atobe knew about him, it was how he is very proud of his successful fund-raising project for the art department and that Atobe had supported a lot of the University’s fund-raisers, especially for the arts and sports, tennis, in particular. In return, Fuji had assisted Atobe’s Annual Holiday fund-raisers.

He and Tezuka, well he, already planned out the rest of their evening activities, quite carefully and secretly. It was crucial for Tezuka to be with him minus Atobe’s attendance, but Atobe’s being a good friend for helping out with the fund-raiser. Fuji raked both his hands through his hair, pushing his head back, frustrated. He stared at the white ceiling, thinking, scheming a way out of Atobe’s after-party plan to have them attend the ball. He didn’t want to feel guilty about his selfish desire to push his own private after party plans with Tezuka, at their apartment, without Atobe!

After all the almost arguments they had during the week, Fuji just needed to have a relax evening with his boyfriend.

“Fuji are you listening to me at all?” Atobe sounded loudly, “You have me on the speaker phone for a while now!”

“I’m multi-tasking!” Fuji blurted, “Atobe, I am the lead organizer for the party, I can’t just leave the crew to go to a ball.”

“But Cinder-Fuji won’t leave Prince Tezuka alone at a ball…with the awesome Prince himself." Atobe bantered royally.

“That’s not fair, Keigo." Fuji muttered.

“Fuji, Fuji. Fuji,” Atobe sighed dramatically, “You know very well. Your Prince will never leave you alone. Have your minions to do the multi-tasking. You don’t have to do everything…that’s too stressful … even for Tezuka.” Atobe continued. “Things won’t go awry without your genius maneuverings. Your group will eventually have to deal with doing things without your creative hold.”

Fuji knew everything Atobe stated was right, everything, about Tezuka and his art team. He needed to give his group some credit. He’s done the planning and organizing. He’ll leave the team to take care of the rest. Of course, he wouldn’t openly acknowledge Atobe being on the right this time. It would only blow up the haughty man’s head, and he’ll never hear nor see the end of his gloating.

“I’ll see what I can do,” Fuji answered. “I have to go Atobe.”

The artist heard the caller’s heavy sighing once more, this time a sense of frustration emanated from the phone.

“Keigo, thank you,” Fuji smiled gazing at his phone. “I’ll text Tezuka about the ball.”

“Oh, let me!” Atobe sounded excited again. “Leave that task to me, please?”

Fuji smiled, shaking his head, “Go ahead, but be gentle with my Kunimitsu!”

Fuji crossed his fingers and hoped Tezuka would not get upset. He sighed this time, closing his phone.

Fuji opened his email and began typing the instructions for the new assignments for the evening activity. He made up his mind. They will leave after the announcement of the costume auction winner and attend Atobe’s Masquerade Ball.

He slumped back on his chair, a little bit upset about the changes. The artist was not exactly sure how his boyfriend would think about the sudden change of plans. Fuji figured. Tezuka has no idea about his own plans for the rest of the evening, what he didn’t know won’t bother him.

“Guess we’ll chance it another time, Kunimitsu.”
