A/N: This fic was inspired by a scene in Episode 17: Powa Maka Moana (Pirates) when Steve and Danny investigated a pawn shop owner in Kalihi.
“A grenade?”
“It got his attention.”
“You pulled the pin off a freaking grenade, McGarett!” A pair of blue eyes stared in disbelief.
“McGarett? What happened to Steve O?” Steve asked, “Or Baby?” A teasing smile curved his lips, “You like calling me Baby.”
The former New Jersey detective stared at the tall, tanned casually dressed military man, his partner, his boss, his lover. He couldn’t believe Steve would openly utter those terms of endearment he uses during moments of their shared intimacy.
“You are crazy, you know that!” Danny blurted. He watched Steve innocently throw both of his hands in the air, like he hadn’t done anything wrong.
“What?” Steve asked, “You wanted the steel gate opened.”
“And you think that’s ok?” Danny asked flatly with his usual sarcastic New Jersey tone and accent, “ Grenade explodes in downtown Kalihi, IN.THE.MIDDLE.OF.THE. FREAKIN’.DAY!”
Danny watched Steve, noticing the twitch of his jaw. He waited for the taller man go through the motion of calming his nerves down.
“He called you sunshine,’ Steve stated, still quite tense and carefully holding back his anger.
“What?”
“That punk hit on you. I didn’t like that at all.” Steve explained, turning away from Danny momentarily to hide the sudden tint burning his cheeks.
Wide eyed, Danny gazed at the muscles tensing on Steve’s arms and back. He wondered if his suspicions about Steve’s mental condition just might be right on the A-ball. A smile hit his lips upon realizing that his partner confessed he was jealous. He figured he might as well make him suffer a little with his sarcasm.
“So you decided to use a dangerous explosive device that one, could’ve killed that guy Lono, two could’ve killed innocent passer by and three, KILLED US!”
Steve turned to faced Danny, once again the usual tensing of his jaw apparent.
“But it didn’t! I was careful. I made sure it only took care of the door.” Steve eyed him, just like he was explaining some kind of standard operating procedure.
“You’re just fearless, aren’t you?”
“Casual,” Steve smiled. “All in a day’s work, Danno.”
Danny shook his head once more. “I think you need some form of counseling, and I’ll take care of the fees.”
“Nope. Not good enough. I just need a quiet evening with you.” Steve leaned closer and whispered, “Sunshine.”
