“I don’t know what you saw in him Naoji.  Caring  for people is a sign of weakness.”  Ludwig coldly declared.  Naoji expected Ludwig’s coldness towards Orpherus as his usual reaction towards everybody in the academy.  But underneath the stoic demeanor, Ludwig felt betrayed by Naoji’s feelings towards the other Strahl candidate.  Ludwig wanted him and sought his companionship the very week he arrived in the academy. But Naoji, despite their close friendship, could not deny what caught his eyes from the start and it was not Ludwig.

“His concern for everyone shows heart and there’s nothing wrong with that.  You could learn from him too, if you tried.”  Naoji replied. His eyes reflected his love for Orpherus as he spoke to defend him.  Ludwig raised his brow in response  before seeping his tea.

“If I do will you look at me differently?”  Ludwig queried, watching him to react to his sudden straightforward question.  Naoji had a confused look as he eyed his friend but only for a moment. 

“I see you as you are and I see nothing wrong.  What’s there for me to see differently?”  Naoji asked.

Ludwig state remained unchanged, stoic as ever hiding the hurt that just stabbed him.   Unbeknownst to Naoji, Ludwig wanted more than a friend who saw no fault in him.  He wanted Naoji to love him for what he is.
