Souji watched the fireworks from the rooftop, all alone with only his thoughts of the future occupying his whole being. He reminisced on the years he had so far to look back to and wondered how many more seasons he could add in the coming days.
“A new year,” he thought to himself, he made a wish or more like prayed, that this would not be the last. But odds were against him and he couldn’t overlook the things beyond his control. He was living on borrowed time.
A tear dropped and he smiled. Life was good so far, he had no complaints.
In his young life he experienced everything that needed to be experienced. There were friends; he was never alone, despite the absence of family. The Shinsengumi became his family and erased the pains from the past.
There was knowledge, he learned and mastered his craft as a brave warrior and here he was, now a First Captain. The most important of all, he loved and was loved by the one and only person in the world he had kept in his heart.
Nothing to this day left him in despair; his memories of the past were of happy ones and helped lift the clouds of sadness when he was reminded of his physical condition, his pending end. But who knew how his lifetime in this universe would end. His country was in a state of flux and enemies could snuff out his breath with a single cut, he was no longer afraid of his ailment. Eventually all things would come to an end, no one could control this path of destiny.
Souji sighed. He drew his attention back to the colorful display of fireworks over the horizon. The bright explosions of colorful, glimmering lights embellished the dark skies before him.
Warmth enveloped him as he sensed the embrace coming from behind. He wasn’t startled from this unexpected presence but welcomed it instead. He held on to the arms now around his waist and rested his head on the chest behind him. He smiled as he tilted his head to look up at Hijikata’s smiling face. A kiss, they shared, while the fireworks noisily animated the darkness above.
Souji’s heart fluttered. He was contented. He was not alone.
